| | About Us | The Geisinger Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgical Fellowship is a one-year clinical program for advanced minimally invasive general and foregut surgery. The program offers a broad clinical experience in general and thoracic minimally invasive surgery with particular emphasis on esophageal and bariatric surgery. The fellows experience broad training in UGI endoscopy with emphasis on therapeutic procedures including dilation and stents. Geisinger Health System serves approximately 2.5 million people in northeastern and central Pennsylvania and is the only tertiary care referral center for the region. Geisinger Medical Center is a 500-bed hospital with four dedicated minimally invasive surgical suites. The health system has an advanced EMR that is designed to assist in clinical outcomes data collection. The fellows are faculty members and have independent operating privileges for non-training cases. They supervise the MIS Bariatrics rotation with a PGY1 and PGY3 resident. The fellows participate in outpatient clinic one day per week. Fellows are expected to participate in clinical outcomes research and are required to present at least one paper at a national meeting each year and author at least one peer-reviewed publication per year. Education conferences include ... Monthly Multidisciplinary Bariatric and Bariatric QA, GI and Oncology Conferences as well as M&M and Journal Club. Special Features - The program emphasizes benign and malignant esophageal surgery including fundoplication myotomy, gastroplasty and esophagectomy.
- The surgical experience includes complex minimally invasive re-operative surgery.
- The MIS fellows actively participate in a multidisciplinary bariatric program that includes GI Bariatric Fellows. Geisinger Medical Center is A Bariatric Center of Excellence through the SRC (Surgical Review Board) and the ACS (American College of Surgeons).
- MIS Fellows have the opportunity to rotate with two colorectal surgeons who performed about 100 Lap colectomies annually.
- Geisinger has one of the most advanced electronic medical record systems in the country.
