| | Curriculum | Year 1 Inpatient Consultative Nephrology and Transplantation Medicine During the first year, fellows principally divide their time between the renal inpatient-consultative, chronic dialysis units, and the transplant services at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA. The Medical Center houses a 366 bed tertiary and quaternary care facility with active trauma, cardiac surgery, multiple solid organ and bone marrow transplant and other services. While on the consultative service, fellows participate in the diagnosis and management of a full complement of renal, fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base disorders. During their months on the transplant service, they participate in the pre- and post-transplant evaluation and management of kidney and kidney-pancreas recipients and consult on kidney and electrolyte management issues on the liver, cardiac and bone marrow transplant services. A weekly half-day outpatient continuity clinic is established in the first year under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Year 2 Ambulatory and Investigative Nephrology The second year is principally devoted to one or more research projects. Fellows may select among clinical and basic research projects (including transplant immuno-biology) with faculty-investigators. During this time, fellows continue their outpatient activities with extended time in the ambulatory clinics and chronic dialysis units and participate in weekend coverage of the inpatient consultative/transplantation services. Year 3 (Optional) Ambulatory and Investigative Nephrology A third year offers fellows the opportunity to extend their time in research while also providing additional ambulatory experiences at several of the Renal Medicine Division's affiliated free-standing dialysis units. |
