| | Curriculum | | During the first year, the vascular fellow participates in clinical care and research activities. Endovascular skills are developed the first year. Approximately 80% of this year is focused on endovascular training. Staff vascular surgeons train the fellow in these skills. Overall endovascular volume includes approximately 300 interventional cases and 150 diagnostic cases per fellow. These cases are performed in a dedicated endovascular suite. In addition, training in a fully equipped noninvasive vascular laboratory in which more than 8,000 examinations are performed each year, allows the fellow to develop competency in the interpretation of vascular laboratory procedures.
Clinical and basic science research activities in the medical center and in the adjacent Sigfried and Janet Weis Center for Research round out the first year. Presentation of findings at national meetings and publications in referred journals are strongly encouraged and supported.
During the second year, the vascular surgery fellow serves as the surgeon and primary care provider for more than 300 vascular disease patients whose conditions represent all the significant vascular reconstructive procedures. The attending staff physicians make regular patient rounds and are available for consultation. Emergent and urgent procedures comprise approximately 10 percent of the caseload. The clinical aspects of training are complemented with weekly didactic, preoperative, and morbidity and mortality conferences. The fellow is expected to participate in continuing education activities for which a stipend is provided. |
