Bryan Martin, DO
Medical School: Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine
Residency: Geisinger Medical Center
Future plans: Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship, Geisinger Medical Center

I would like to thank you for your interest in the General Internal Medicine Residency program at Geisinger. We have much to offer you in regards to graduate medical education here at Geisinger and I have had the opportunity to

experience this commitment since I first rotated here in Internal Medicine during my third year of medical school. Throughout my three years here Geisinger has become recognized nationally with numerous awards and commendations. I have seen the addition of new fellowship programs and expansion of the health system which speaks to our focus on graduate medical education and our financial strengths.

Lauren DiMarino, D.O.
Medical School: Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine
Residency: Geisinger Medical Center
Future plans: Hospitalist/academic medicine

Welcome to Geisinger Medical Center. My interest with Geisinger began when I was a third year medical student. I rotated through cardiology and was amazed at the vast pathology that this institution has to offer.

Geisinger Medical Center has the advantage of being a strong academic teaching hospital in a busy tertiary care hospital, similar to what one might find in the inner cities, yet is nestled in the heart of a wonderful Pennsylvania community. Throughout my three years of training, I have had the opportunity to see Geisinger grow, not only in the department of Internal Medicine, but also the hospital as a whole.

Geisinger is a tertiary care center located in central Pennsylvania. The hospital was built in 1915 and is modeled after the Mayo clinic. As initially intended by the founder of the hospital, Abigail Geisinger, we provide care to over 2 million Pennsylvanians as a result of our location. The disease states seen here run a wide spectrum from common, community hospital type illness on to the scope of complex medical problems (the so-called “Zebras”) which require specialized treatment that this population can only receive here at Geisinger. We have been named Hospitals and Health Networks 2009 “100 most wired”. This award is our seventh straight. The technology here includes a fully integrated electronic health record accessible at any computer in the hospital and a record that can also be fully accessed from home. In 2008 we were named by Thomson Reuters as one of the “100 Top Hospitals Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success list.” The newly constructed Hospital for Advanced Medicine will open in early 2010 and this new hospital will be focused on Cardiovascular care to our patients. We’ve also been mentioned by President Barack Obama in two recent speeches, one of which was given to the AMA. In June he commented, “"We need to build on the examples of outstanding medicine at places... like Geisinger Health System in rural Pennsylvania…where high quality care is being provided at costs well below the national average."

The Medical center has over 430 beds and is located in Danville, PA which is located in the central part of the state and has a population of approximately 5000. This small community fosters friendships between residents and attendings. As a result of our location, there are plenty of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. The residents take part in sporting activities such as Basketball and Flag football. We are located approximately 2.5 hours from New York City and Philadelphia. Danville provides economical living expenses and is a safe area to raise a family.

As you can see, we are proud of what Geisinger Medical Center’s General Internal Medicine Residency program has to offer and look forward to talking with you in the future. Please feel free to contact us and we look forward to reviewing your application.
