*On the GIM wards and cardiology rotations, some interns are assigned to day shifts only, and other do a mixture of days and nights. Over the year, everyone has some nighttime experience, but there is no 24 hour call. **Internal medicine subspecialty selectives: endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics and palliative care, GIM consults, hematology, infectious diseases, nephrology, oncology, pulmonary and rheumatology Conferences The Geisinger Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency program provides 10 hours of didactics weekly, covering a wide array of topics to complement our active inpatient education. Residents attend more than 70% excluding vacations and night duty. Morning Report 11:45 am - 12:30 pm, Tuesday - Friday A daily case presentation, moderated by the chief residents and presented by the residents, from both the general internal medicine service as well as subspecialties services. Subspecialty and general internal medicine staff attend to assist with the discussion. Noon conference 12:30 - 1:30 pm Monday - Thursday A daily didactic lecture presented by the attending staff. These lectures are designed to cover the core curriculum. Grand rounds 12:30 - 1:30 pm Fridays A weekly conference for the division of medicine presented by visiting professors and guest physicians, as well as Geisinger Medical Center faculty. Morbidity & Mortality conference 12:30 - 1:30 pm Third Wednesday of every month A monthly interdisciplinary conference for the review of cases in which morbidity or mortality has occurred. The cases are presented by a resident and attending with the focus of the discussion on quality and performance improvement. Board Review 11:45 am - 12:30 pm Mondays A weekly session focused on topics particularly important for passage of the American Board of Internal Medicine Certifying Examination. The MKSAP questions are reviewed with staff. Topics are chosen based upon the ABIM certification exam blueprints. Journal club 12:30 - 1:30 pm Second and Fourth Monday of every month A session focused on teaching house officers how to interpret and critique study designs and conclusions of journal articles. One resident presents during the session with a review of a landmark or current article. |
