The Geisinger Internal Medicine Residency is growing and now comprises 16 residents per year and seven preliminary interns. We have recently graduated the first fellows from our nephrology fellowship and increased the number of fellows in our cardiology, gastroenterology, gastroenterology /nutrition and rheumatology fellowships (Click for a list of the fellowships Geisinger offers). Our Critical Care Medicine Fellowship has begun training fellows as of July 1, 2009. Beyond the growth of medical education, Geisinger has been building new facilities to enhance the education of our residents. The new Hospital for Advanced Medicine is due to open in early 2010 and will feature state of the art patient rooms and technology. Our residency curriculum is designed to give house staff a strong foundation in general internal medicine outpatient, inpatient, and intensive care, as well as significant experience in all the subspecialties of medicine. Residents may opt to do a continuity clinic in the specialty of their choice if further experience in a specialty is desired. We sponsor a dually accredited residency for osteopathic residents, allowing completion of all AOBIM and ABIM requirements in three years, with one standard curriculum. Osteopathic residents attend monthly osteopathic grand rounds and have monthly hands-on manipulation training. Geisinger boasts a long tradition of providing excellent patient care through exceptional nursing and physician service. President Barack Obama has recently cited Geisinger as a model for national healthcare reform. Twenty-four hour ancillary support frees physicians from routine tasks, including phlebotomy, IV, radiology and patient transport. We utilize an electronic medical record in all aspects of care, including data review, order entry, and all charting. All radiographic studies are film less. We have provided computer terminals in all clinic rooms, all call rooms and physician work rooms on every floor. In the past three years, our graduates went on to fellowships in all of the medical subspecialties. They obtained fellowships at The University of Pennsylvania, Baylor, The University of Tennessee Memphis, Mayo Clinic, Syracuse University, National Institutes of Health, University of Texas Galveston, The University of Rochester, and Memorial Sloan Kettering, Washington Hospital Center, Cleveland Clinic, The University of Pittsburgh, Geisinger and other excellent institutions. |
