Overview
Geisinger’s mission is to enhance quality of life through an integrated health service organization based on a balanced program of patient care, education, research, and community service. Through innovative initiatives, Geisinger Health System is able to provide high quality, comprehensive and cost-effective healthcare for its patients and is viewed as a national leader in health care. Similarly, Geisinger is uniquely poised to provide innovation in health education.

Quality improvement
Residents have the opportunity to attend Gesinger’s Quality Short Course. Offered annually, this year-long curriculum is designed to teach and apply basic quality improvement skills. In addition to didactic sessions, residents are engaged in active QI teams and committees throughout the institution, with a goal of completing an independent QI project. This experience imparts an invaluable skill set for learners embarking on careers in today’s medical climate.

Cognitive skills
Offered annually, this seminar provides residents practical and useful advice on effective study strategies, test-taking skills and time management. Individuals may request private sessions to focus on increasing learning productivity and efficiency.

MPH track
Qualified Geisinger residents may apply for the Masters Program in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomburg School of Public Health. Once accepted, Geisinger pays the tuition and residents use their elective time to complete coursework. Candidates complete class work in several two week blocks at the Baltimore Hopkins campus. The remainder of the coursework is completed via distance electronic learning. Residents complete their residency, as scheduled. After graduation, residents are guaranteed a position at Geisinger to complete the full program requirements.

International health
Pediatric and med-peds residents have the opportunity to participate in international health electives. Previous residents have traveled to Honduras, India, Namibia, and the Ukrainian Republic. This experience occurs as part of a structured educational rotation and a board-certified Geisinger physician accompanies residents during the trip.

Medical Informatics
Geisinger is also an award-winning performer in the arena of health information technology (HIT) and participates in unifying electronic health records across the state and nation. In the past, residents have been intimately involved with the implementation of our inpatient electronic health record. Residents wishing to pursue additional learning opportunities can arrange electives with our medical informatics department.
