Curriculum

Monthly rotations
Comprehensive. Individualized. Progressive.

The curriculum features rotations in relevant primary care areas, such as ER, SICU, and internal medicine, with exposure to all subspecialty areas. Rotations in house and at our affiliated hospital Geisinger Wyoming Valley provide an ample and complete experience in general gynecological surgery as well as advanced laparoscopic and hyteroscopic training.

Residents are required to complete at least 1 research project during their four years. The projects are presented during our annual research event and must be worthy of submission to a peer-reviewed journal. In addition to the annual CREOG exam, residents participate twice a year in Mock Oral exams at both the Junior and Senior level.

A final learning opportunity that enhances the resident’s academic experience at Geisinger is the popular programs for both 3rd and 4th year medical students, providing house staff the chance to supervise and teach in their own specialty.

Fast-Track

Osteopathic residents: Geisinger is proud to have both a free-standing AOA accredited osteopathic residency in addition to a fast-track residency whereby osteopathic candidates get dual credit during their first year for both a transitional year and first year of residency.

Didactics
Weekly mortality and morbidity reviews for both OB and GYN services enhance both resident and faculty learning and result in exceptional patient care. Grand rounds, Thursday morning didactic lectures and Journal Clubs round out the experience with protected time prioritized and built into the schedule.

Continuity Clinic
Patients are seen at the newly designed, state of the art Women’s Pavilion for all aspects of their reproductive care. Each resident is assigned a panel of obstetric and gynecological patients which they follow throughout their 4 years in the clinic, under the supervision of faculty. Additionally, the department maintains subspecialty clinics in gyne-oncology, endocrine-infertility, urogynecology and maternal-fetal medicine.

The Environment
Diverse. Challenging. Compassionate.
Residents in the OB/GYN Program at Geisinger are exposed to a variety of unusual clinical challenges given the vast referral base of the hospital. This coupled with the outstanding reputation the medical center has in the immediate community virtually insures a 4 year experience that results in a outstanding education. Gynecological cases are abundant with 2-3 OR’s functioning 5 days a week. Additionally, Geisinger is well-prepared for the volume of both normal and high-risk obstetrics it handles, with 24 hour anesthesia, and neonatology and a state of the art Neonatal intensive care unit.
