About Us

Geisinger Health System (GHS), serving more than 3 million people in central and northeastern Pennsylvania, has been nationally recognized for innovative practices, quality care and an award-winning electronic medical record, EPIC, connecting a comprehensive network of 4 hospitals, 43 community practice sites and more than 900 Geisinger primary and specialty care physicians.

As an orthopaedic resident, the majority of your training will take place at Geisinger Medical Center (GMC), Danville, Pa., the largest tertiary/quaternary care teaching hospital in the region- licensed for 475 beds, including 89 pediatric beds in Geisinger's Janet Weis Children’s Hospital. GMC, a Magnet hospital, maintains the region’s only Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center- providing our residents a broad clinical experience, including extensive fracture cases.

Geisinger’s orthopaedic residency program recently moved from two residents per year, to three, as a direct result of the learning opportunities that are present here.  After the 2012 match, the program realized its full complement of 15 residents.  Our program continues to attract prime residents from the nations’ finest medical schools, because they know that Geisinger’s training program offers one-on-one educational opportunities between the resident and the attending faculty and the ability to provide continuity of care by following patients from diagnosis through recovery.

History

In 1915, Abigail Geisinger inspired her first surgeon-in-chief, Harold Foss, MD, a former Mayo Clinic fellow, to create a hospital grounded in the concepts of group practice and an interdisciplinary approach to patient care.  Nearly a century later, Mrs. Geisinger’s hospital has evolved into one of the country’s most innovative integrated health services organizations and serves as a national model for the redesign of healthcare.
