| | Curriculum | | The curriculum of the Otolaryngology Residency Program consists of several facets: | - Daily one-on-one mentoring in the clinic and in the operating room.
- Twice monthly audiology/otology conferences with otologists, audiologists, and vestibular rehabilitation therapists.
- Every other month Multi-disciplinary Sleep Disordered Breathing Conferences with otolaryngologists, pulmonologists, and neurologists.
- Every other Wednesday morning academic conferences: ENT Grand Rounds Conferences, Facial Trauma Conferences, and Interesting Case/M&M Conferences, Attending Staff Academic Sessions (with a two-year rotating curriculum).
- Every Wednesday Head and Neck Tumor Board: a multi-disciplinary clinical conference with head & neck oncologic surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, dentist/prosthodontist, oromaxillofacial surgeons, and pathologists.
- Monthly Pathology Conference led by the chairman of the pathology department covers the gamut of ENT pathology.
- Monthly Surgical Grand Rounds with presentations by Geisinger surgical staff and nationally recognized experts in the various surgical fields.
- Every other year Head and Neck Anatomic Cadaveric Dissections.
- The Microsurgical Temporal Bone Skills Lab affords a yearly temporal bone anatomy course for new residents and supervised anatomic dissection times for all ENT residents at least twice yearly.
- Monthly ENT Journal Club emphasizing subspecialty areas on a rotating basis.
On call During the first year, on-call time is split between in-house and from home. During the last four years, call is from home. PGY 2 and 3 are first call and PGY 4 and 5 are backup call. Facial trauma call is every other two weeks. OMFS and Plastic Surgery split the off weeks. Research Research is mandatory and done in a two-month block in the PGY-3 year and another two-month block in the PGY-4. Basic science research and prospective clinical studies are both encouraged. |
