Curriculum
Geisinger Medical Center exposes its house staff to a health care model that is fully integrated and dynamic which encompasses all aspects of primary care, subspecialty care and tertiary care. The Geisinger Health system is the nation's largest rural practice with its own health care insurance, its own home care services, primary care and tertiary care medical center.

Our broad-based curriculum encompasses a combination of unique and traditional educational experiences whose general objectives include the six medical competencies as outlined by the ACGME: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, interpersonal skills and communication, professionalism and systems-based practice.

It is expected that residents are willing to assume increasing responsibility for their own education. We are committed to provide the tools and education for the residents to succeed in this expectation.

  • The program provides special curriculum on evidence-based medicine, "the resident as teacher," retreats, administrative aspects of medicine and preparing/giving presentations.
  • PL1 residents relocate to a beautiful site in September for a 2-day retreat. The purpose is to promote mutual support, teamwork, and camaraderie. In addition, canoeing, hiking, and talking around a campfire are encouraged.
  • PL2 and PL3 residents have a retreat late in the year which focuses on leadership skills and qualities, teaching and skills of an educator.ยท Special arrangements can be made to allow for part time training.
