Pediatric residency should prepare the physician to be a leader in child advocacy within their communities. Geisinger pediatric residents are given the opportunities to go beyond traditional inpatient and outpatient settings in order to foster this vital role. Pediatric residents at Geisinger Medical Center have the opportunity to participate in medical missions. Teams of Geisinger physicians and nurses regularly travel to several villages in Honduras. The teams provide care to hundreds of children each day, many of them suffering from malnutrition, parasites and unusual tropical infections. In addition, this team delivers huge quantities of medical supplies to the area served; some of it will continue to be used for months after their departure. Residents make several other trips each year. Recently, oir residents have traveled to India, Kenya, Brazil and Ecquador. Residents routinely participate in school programs at elementary and secondary educational levels. These activities include health promotion and health education activities within the child's classroom setting or health fairs throughout the community. Also, residents may provide services such as preparticipation sports physicians for needy children. Many residents serve as mentors for the local schools' career day activities. Rotations in adolescent medicine include visits to local college health clinics where our residents serve as young adult care givers under the direction of attendings with specific training. Pediatric residents may also choose to participate in one of several programs for children sponsored by or affiliated with Geisinger Medical Center. Geisinger camp programs take place at Camp Victory: Camp Dost, one of the first summer camps in northeastern Pennsylvania for children with cancer; Camp Breath Easy for children with asthma. The other affiliated camps include: Burn Camp, Camp New Horizons (for pregnant teens), Little People of American (dwarfs), PA Vent Camp (ventilator-dependent children), Camp Setebaid (diabetic youth camp), AIDS camp, Autism Camp, Camp Echo (congenital heart disease), Camp Horizon (dermatology), Camp Kydnie (kidney disease), Camp JRA, Camp Spifida, and Campability (family camp with special needs camper). |
