Outpatient Services

The Pediatric Residency Program has an extensive outpatient program. Pediatric primary care and subspecialty clinics are located on the main campus in the Knapper Clinic and in Foss Clinic. The outpatient clinics had over 48,000 visits last year. All outpatient clinics have electronic medical records which are integrated with all the outpatient clinics in the entire health system. In addition to the hospital and main campus clinics, numerous community-based clinics are conveniently located within a short driving distance. Most pediatric subspecialties have outreach clinics that serve a much wider geographical area in central and northeast Pennsylvania. Residents may accompany attendings to outreach clinics to obtain a different clinical experience and perspective.Residents participate in various outpatient services as list below:

Continuity Clinic
Continuity Clinics occur at both the Knapper Clinic and Foss Clinic 6. Both of these clinics are located on the main hospital campus. Residents are directly supervised by members of the general pediatric faculty.  Interns are assigned ½ day clinic per week. Upper level residents are assigned one full clinic day per week. This may be taken as an entire day of general pediatrics or split between ½ day of general pediatrics and ½ day of subspecialty continuity clinic. Subspecialty continuity clinics allow upper level residents to assume the regular management of children with chronic illness as the patient’s subspecialist. After initial diagnosis, residents follow these patients in their clinic over the course of the remainder of their residency. Subspecialty continuity clinic is available in pediatric allergy/immunology, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, nephrology, neurology, neurodevelopmental pediatrics and pulmonology.

Acute Care Clinic
The Acute Care Clinic is located at the Knapper Clinic. Roughly 15,000 children are seen annually in the Acute Care Clinic. Common patient problems include burns, head injuries, bite wounds, ingestions, lacerations, acute asthma, as well as the more common infectious illnesses and dehydration. The ACC team typically consists of 3 interns, 1-2 mid level residents and 1 third year resident. Second year emergency medicine residents may also join the team. Residents participate in shifts throughout the day. Interns are responsible for overnight call on an average of 1:5-8 evenings.
