Research/Scholarly Activities

Geisinger Health System's Weis Center for Research offers a variety of research opportunities - basic science research, translational research, clinical research including outcomes and epidemiology, and health services research. Projects and/or independent study under faculty mentorship are encouraged.

The newly established clinical trials office provides opportunities for involvement in important clinical trials.House staff may request financial support for a particular research project. Residents who are involved in a promising research project are also permitted to spend a month of their elective time doing research.  In addition, upper level residents may elect to utilize part of their additional continuity clinic time to pursue longitudinal research projects.  The majority of our categorical residents have completed abstracts which have been accepted for publication or presentation at national meetings.

Expenses are paid for house staff who are invited to present their work at a medical conference. Support for visual material productions, secretarial support, and statistical analysis are also provided. All house staff are expected to participate in scholarly activities. They are required to present Pediatric Grand Rounds during their senior year. Residents are also encouraged to prepare and submit case reports, literature reviews and other scholarly writing of timely topics under the guidance of faculty preceptorship. All residents are required to complete and present Critically-Appraised Questions (CAQs) during their residency.

The purpose of the CAQs is to formulate answerable clinical questions about a patient the resident is managing and to learn how to find and develop a clinically useful answer to the question through critical review of the literature. This activity occurs during the inpatient months of the year.
