Grow with Geisinger The Department of Surgery at Geisinger Medical Center is committed to educating superior clinical and academic surgeons. |  | To achieve this goal, the general surgery residency program is structured to provide the opportunity for well qualified and highly motivated individuals to participate in the care of a variety of patient problems and in scholarly activities. The residency program is fully accredited and graduates three chief residents each year. Three PGY1 residents are accepted into the categorical program each year, providing a non-pyramidal structure to the program. Two R-1 prelim positions and one R-2 prelim position are available for residents planning to train in other specialty areas of surgery. Residents achieve clinical proficiency through graduated responsibility commensurate with their ability and level of training. Resident participation in research, either clinical or basic science, is required and supported by the research and education coordinator. An orientation to the clinical skills needed to perform basic preoperative and postoperative surgical care is conducted for incoming interns. |
