On Call
It is the intention of the Department of Urology that the Chief resident take back-up call rather than first call. In this fashion, the Chief resident will be available to the other residents for direct and general supervision as needed at night and on weekends. It is expected that the Chief resident would be off call at least every 2 out of 3 weekends, when on vacation, or away at conferences. The Chief resident is responsible for coordinating the resident call schedule.

The first year resident is directly supervised by the Chief resident or teaching faculty while on call for any substantive patient encounters and generally for all routine patient encounters. The second year resident may be generally supervised for most patient encounters while on call except for procedures for which the resident has not achieved competency or when caring for seriously ill patients. In this circumstance, it is expected that the second year resident determine the appropriate diagnostic work-up, develop a treatment plan and monitor treatment outcomes under direct supervision of the Chief resident and/or faculty.

The Senior resident will develop the diagnostic evaluation, select treatment and implement therapy, including the management of complications of patients treated while on call. These activities will be conducted under general supervision by the teaching faculty and the Chief resident except in the case of seriously ill patients.

The call schedule is shared by the Senior and two junior residents. The Urology Department’s Physician Assistants rotate on the call schedule each Monday.
