Program Director’s Message
The core mission of the Geisinger Medical Center Urology Residency Program is to educate new urologic physicians in the practice of urologic medicine and surgery with a focus on the application of new technological solutions for common urologic conditions.  Urology residents are introduced to the full spectrum of urologic illness as the faculty provides care to a largely rural and stationary population. Additionally, the resources of the Geisinger Health System, including a state of the art electronic medical record system, surgical robotics program and minimally invasive treatment modalities, are made available to each individual resident during the educational experience.

A sophisticated translational and clinical research program has been coupled with a vibrant clinical care program located in a pleasant location in central Pennsylvania. The educational program is structured around the six general competencies of patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and system-based practice with a robust feedback system that ensures the successful development of each resident over the course of their education.

The teaching faculty is committed to a mentoring process directed towards the maturation of each resident as a physician-scientist capable of accessing and integrating the current best scientific evidence in the care of their patients. Educational rotations have been developed which incorporate training in both basic and clinical science research techniques, as well as in-depth training in biostatistics and information technology. Faculty walk rounds and the monthly Journal Club represent encounters during which residents develop and implement the skills necessary to accurately evaluate the published literature and apply the techniques of evidence based medicine in the daily treatment of their patients.

The Program Director and the teaching faculty have developed an educational curriculum which is vibrant, subject to ongoing quality improvement with active resident feedback and enriched for future based treatment modalities. The graduating resident will be well prepared for the performance of urologic surgery in an up-to-date fashion coupled with the skills for lifelong learning that are required for the continued evolution of our specialty.
