| | Goals and Objectives | The overall educational objective for the rotating student is to develop an appreciation of the practice of critical care medicine through the acquisition of basic cognitive and procedural skills. Specific educational goals will include: | - Learn to evaluate the critically ill medical and surgical patient with sepsis, acute lung injury, multiple organ system failure, trauma, neurosurgical emergencies.
- Acquire an appreciation for the complexities of managing end-of-life care.
- Understand the risks and benefits of vascular, airway, and other invasive procedures.
- Understand the basics of ventilator management, hemodynamic support, intracranial pressure monitoring, interpretation of ABG’s, and radiologic studies.
- Acquire a basic understanding the skill required to perform vascular procedures, airway management and endotracheal intubations, chest tube insertions, and weaning and extubation from mechanical ventilation.
- Mechanical ventilation as a support system and advanced life support techniques will be discussed.
- There will be opportunities to participate in procedural skills.
- Understand the collaborative model of ICU care by observing and working with consultants, primary care physicians, social workers, physical, occupational and speech therapists, dieticians, respiratory therapists, clergy, palliative care/hospice, and pharmacy personnel.
The medical student rotating in Critical Care Medicine will be evaluated based upon multiple criteria. These include: | - Active participation in the daily care of critically ill patients
- Daily presentations during rounds
- Ability to work with all members of the health care
- History taking and physical examinations skills
- Clinical judgment
- Ability to generate appropriate differential diagnoses
- Obtainment of fund of knowledge appropriate for level of training
- Procedural competency (willingness to learn, assist and perform at an appropriate level)
- Oral presentations
- Ability to access and utilize the electronic health record
- Communication and professionalism
- Attendance
- Participation in active learning (reviewing the medical literature, text and educational resource utilization)
The student will be evaluated by attendings with resident input. Visiting students should provide evaluation forms from their respective institutions to be completed at rotation’s end. Grades will be distributed as follows: | It is essential that all students complete a clerkship evaluation and submit it to Tracey Lepley prior to departing. The medical student’s input is strongly encouraged in order to achieve our ongoing educational objectives. |
