Student evaluation
  • Medical students will hand out evaluation cards to the staff and resident physicians they work with for feedback and evaluation purposes. Shift cards must be done for every shift worked.
  • If required by the medical school, a grade for the rotation will be assigned at the end of the month in accordance with the format provided by the medical school.
  • At least once during the rotation, the medical student clerkship coordinator will meet formally with the medical student for feedback and evaluation.
  • At the end of the rotation, a written 25-question quiz will be required.

The final rotation grade will be based the following:

  • 60%: Overall performance in the ED (as determined by the ED staff feedback/shift cards, quality of patient care, quality of ED electronic patient care notes, completion of log sheets, and demonstration of EM knowledge)
  • 20%: Final rotation quiz
  • 20%: Attendance and punctuality
    Completion of a presentation during morning conference (“Sub-I” medical students only)

Criteria for honors grade: In order to receive a grade of Honors for this rotation, students must do each of the following:

  • Receive a score of 4.5 or better after averaging all shift evaluations
  • Receive a score of 80% or better on the final quiz
  • Log a minimum of 60 direct patient encounters
  • Have no unexcused absences
  • Completion of a presentation during morning conference (“Sub-I” students only)
  • Grades will not be released until all departmental items are returned, such as textbooks, CDs, and instructional programs.
  • Students selecting the “Sub-I” tract will be offered a composite standardized letter of recommendation (SLOR) for application to their residency programs upon successful completion of the course requirements.
