Thank you for your interest in an Emergency Medicine (EM) medical student elective at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA. Our Emergency Department is a Level I Trauma Center, with special accreditation in pediatrics. We serve as the primary trauma center covering a population base of over 2,000,000 people in our region, and are the only trauma center in Northeastern/North-Central Pennsylvania with this level of accreditation. We see over 40,000 patients annually, many who are critically ill and are referred from regional, primary emergency departments. Unlike many university-affiliated emergency departments, our patient population includes a mix of adult and pediatric patients, and students will be exposed to patients of all ages everyday. Our 34-bed ED has a three-bay resuscitation room and two ultrasound machines. The resuscitation bay enters directly into a latest generation CT scanner. Plain film radiology, additional CT scanners, the ultrasound department, and the cardiology catheterization lab are all directly adjacent to the department. With ample ancillary support for phlebotomy, IV placement, ECGs, arterial blood gases, and placement of NG tubes and Foley catheters, medical students, and residents are able to focus directly on patient care in addition to learning these basic procedural skills. One of our prime missions is teaching emergency medicine to residents and medical students. The EM Residency Program at Geisinger Medical Center was founded in 1976, making our program one of the oldest and most established EM residencies in the country. Students will attend all scheduled residency lectures and conferences during the rotation, including weekly conference, trauma conference, and journal club. Medical students will also benefit from our Emergency Resuscitation Simulation Lab that is housed immediately adjacent to the EM conference room. The lab provides residents and students with high-fidelity, hands-on experience in handling life-threatening emergencies in a controlled educational setting. Requests for Emergency Medicine rotations at Geisinger Medical Center should be submitted to Douglas Kupas, MD, and Tracey Lepley at the email addresses shown below. Thank you again for your interest in our program. |
