Student Evaluation

The medical student rotating in the pediatric intensive care unit will be evaluated based upon multiple criteria. These include:

  • Active participation in the daily care of PICU patients
  • Daily presentations during rounds
  • Ability to work with all members of the health care team and communication skills
  • History taking and physical examinations skills
  • Clinical judgment
  • Documentation in written and electronic health record
  • Ability to generate appropriate differential diagnoses
  • Obtainment of fund of knowledge appropriate for level of training
  • Procedural competency (willingness to learn, assist and perform at an appropriate level)
  • Oral presentations
  • Ability to access and utilize the electronic health record
  • Communication and professionalism with families of critically ill or injured children
  • Attendance
  • Participation in active learning (reviewing the medical literature, text and educational resource utilization)

The student will be evaluated by attendings with resident input. Grades will be distributed as follows:

  • Honors
  • High Pass
  • Pass
  • Conditional Pass
  • Fail

It is imperative that the student be provided with clinical cases, bedside teaching, formal lectures and the appropriate guidance to have a superior educational experience. Therefore, it is essential that all students complete a clerkship evaluation and submit it to Tracey Lepley prior to departing. The medical student’s input is strongly encouraged in order to achieve our educational objectives.
