Welcome to the Neurosurgery Residency at Geisinger Health System
The Department of Neurosurgery at Geisinger Health System (GHS) has been a strong and well-established presence in the Geisinger System. Our neurosurgery program has been built to provide comprehensive training in neurosurgery to provide a foundation for careers in academics or clinical neurosurgery. The curriculum was designed in keeping with the Matrix and Milestones programs of the ACGME. We currently provide full-service neurosurgical care 24/7/365 via our attending neurosurgical, physician assistant and nursing staff, so that entering residents will be provided with a rich training experience, without service burden, and with ample opportunity to teach and interact with other providers on the service, including students.
Our residency program was approved by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in February 2013 and we have successfully been in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS®) match ever since.
We offer a seven-year training program encompassing education across the breadth of neurosurgery. The Geisinger Neurosurgery Department provides patient care to nearly three million patients in northeast and central Pennsylvania. All areas of neurosurgery are represented, including functional neurosurgery, neurooncology, neurotrauma, neurovascular neurosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery, peripheral nerve surgery, and spinal surgery, as well as neurocritical care and endovascular neurosurgery. GHS's facilities house high-volume surgical centers with full-service inpatient and outpatient neurosurgical facilities, rehabilitation services, and community clinics.
Our program aims to equip trainees with the skills to successfully practice neurosurgery for a lifetime in an ever changing environment. The program integrates extensive practical exposure to all aspects of current clinical neurosurgery with a firm grounding in underlying scientific principles and the methods of clinical investigation and population management, quality improvement and patient engagement made possible by being part of the Geisinger Health System.
Training will take place in two hospitals, Geisinger Medical Center (GMC), in Danville, Pa., and Geisinger Wyoming Valley (GWV), in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Between 2,000 and 3,000 major neurosurgical cases are performed annually in these two institutions. GMC is a large quaternary referral hospital, housing a Level I trauma center, stroke center, and the Janet Weis Children's Hospital. GWV is a large regional hospital housing a Level II trauma center. Throughout, we will partner closely with the neurology residency training program for additional educational opportunities, such as our visiting professor program.
A curriculum overview is provided, and incorporates a year of individualized study during the PGY-4 year so that residents may pursue research programs, clinical enfolded fellowships, or other health-care related advanced degrees or courses of study during this time.
Our faculty includes seven core faculty neurosurgeons and an additional six clinical educator neurosurgeons and our department is still growing. Additionally, we have core faculty in neurology, neuroradiology, interventional neuroradiology and neuropathology, as well as educators in a variety of related fields.
A wide variety of research resources are available in the Geisinger Health System and our faculty are experienced mentors in a variety of settings, including laboratory science, clinical trials, population and public health, health care delivery, and comparative effectiveness research.
More information will be made available as we build our website, so interested applicants are encouraged to check back often. Medical students are also welcomed to apply for visiting rotations.
We look forward to building our residency training program through our already strong foundations of clinical and surgical care, research, health care delivery, and innovations in education.
