General Surgery - Osteopathic Residency

About us

Geisinger Northeast’s graduate training program in general surgery strives to educate critically thinking surgeons who are lifelong learners and leaders in a constantly changing environment. We hope our prospective residents take advantage of some of the unique features of our health system:

  • It is among the leaders in healthcare quality initiatives in the U.S. For example, Geisinger's Quality Institute is a learning institution designed to build organizational capacity to continually improve and redesign work through education and coaching.
  • Geisinger's commitment to research has grown to include two dedicated research centers, the Sigfried and Janet Weis Center for Research, and Henry Hood Center for Health Research as well as system-wide clinical departments and service-line faculty that are engaged in numerous investigative projects.
  • National recognition: One important indicator of quality is whether a hospital and its staff are recognized by independent organizations devoted to measuring healthcare quality.

Need and vision
It is estimated that with 79 million baby boomers reaching retirement age and demanding more medical care, the shortage of general surgeons will worsen if the nation does not start producing more doctors. It is estimated that the nation will experience a projected shortage of 85,000 to 200,000 doctors by 2020. Unless more medical students begin their 10-year training soon, the supply will begin to diminish within a decade, when doctors from the baby boomer generation retire in massive quantities.

The addition of an osteopathic surgical residency program at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center (GWV) is an important dimension of strengthening Geisinger's near- and long-term position as a leader in the training and development of surgical physicians. The program is a five-year osteopathic surgical program. Five residents will be accepted each year in the program. Population trends in the surrounding counties along with Geisinger's growing clinical program platform support this location.

Student interest in surgical programs continues to grow. There were few AOA-accredited programs that went unfilled in the AOA match this year. All of the ACGME programs in the northeast filled in this year's NRMP match. Many DOs matched into these positions. Surgical residents from the Geisinger Medical Center program and the PCOM program have been training at GWV for the past several years.

Geisinger is an integrated health care system that offers a unique learning environment. This unique learning environment has helped attract and retrain high caliber residents. An osteopathic surgical program will provide the opportunity to effectively compete with current programs in the state of Pennsylvania and also nationally. This program will strengthen Geisinger's commitment to meet our ongoing recruitment needs and provide the surgical care to the people in our region.

Advisor system
Each resident will be assigned a faculty advisor at the beginning of the academic year, at the PGY-1 level. This person will be the resident’s advocate for both personal and residency related issues. During the academic year the resident and faculty advisor will review the resident’s performance and to address any personal issue that may affect the resident.

The faculty advisor must document his/her meeting with his/her advisee either via formal documentation or via e-mail submitted to residency coordinator. These documents will be kept in the resident’s file. To enhance the value of the advisor/advisee program, it is encouraged that the advisor meets socially with the resident and his/her significant other to establish a closer and more meaningful relationship. At completion of the first year of training, each categorical resident may choose his/her own advisor for the duration of the training, or keep the assigned advisor, if so chosen. Ideally, the choice of an advisor for the duration of training should be based on career choice, compatibility, interests and availability.
