DANVILLE, Pa. – Geisinger President and CEO David T. Feinberg, M.D., MBA, ranked in the top three in Modern Healthcare magazine's 2018 list of the 50 Most Influential Physician Executives and Leaders.

For the second straight year, Dr. Feinberg is ranked third on this esteemed list of innovators who excel in community service and demonstrate reputable executive authority.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, commissioner, Food and Drug Administration, tops the list, with Dr. Marc Harrison, president and CEO, Intermountain Healthcare, second; Dr. Craig Samitt, executive vice president and chief clinical office, Anthem, fourth; and Dr. Nick Turkal, co-president and co-CEO, Advocate Aurora Healthcare, fifth.

In recognizing Dr. Feinberg, Modern Healthcare wrote: “Feinberg has led the Danville, Pa.-based integrated delivery system since 2015. In Geisinger’s continued push to embrace consumerism, the health system became one of the first in 2018 to announce that it would link patient medical records with Apple’s Health app, a move intended to increase interoperability. In May, Feinberg also announced that Geisinger would spend “under $5 million” to sequence DNA for a large number of patients in hopes of improving outcomes."

Now in its 14th year, Modern Healthcare’s annual list acknowledges physicians working in the healthcare industry who are deemed by their peers and an expert panel to be the most influential in terms of demonstrating leadership and impact.

“From the opioid crisis to dramatic changes in public policy to a shifting reimbursement model, healthcare organizations are facing significant challenges. The physician executives on this year’s list are at the forefront of driving change in the healthcare industry,” said Matthew Weinstock, Modern Healthcare’s managing editor. “The list includes physician executives who are influencing healthcare both locally and nationally. We had an impressive list of nominees this year and getting it down to 50 was not easy, but we believe this list is representative of the transformation that’s taking place in the industry.”

Since becoming Geisinger’s CEO and president in May 2015, Dr. Feinberg has put the system focus on improving the patient experience and caring for patients and members. He has made it the stated goal that every Geisinger patient is treated with compassion, dignity and respect while receiving optimum care.

Towards that goal, Dr. Feinberg launched SpringBoard Health, a population health initiative to improve the health of an entire community, beginning with Scranton, Pa. He also introduced ProvenExperience, which provides refunds to patients unhappy with their care and experience.

This is the fifth time Dr. Feinberg has been named to Modern’s Healthcare’s “50 Most Influential Physician Executives and Leaders.”
