Geisinger Commonwealth, Scranton Primary Health Care Center again host Steamtown Health Fair

Preserving health and having fun are the twin goals of the seventh annual Steamtown Health Fair. The health fair, hosted by second-year medical students from Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GCSOM) in partnership with Scranton Primary Health Care Center, is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school’s Medical Sciences Building, 525 Pine St., Scranton. The event is free and family friendly.

“The health fair will be not only an informative day, but a fun one. This year we have an expanded array of vendors and activities,” said Cecilia Strauch of Factoryville, one of the student organizers of the event. “Returning to the fair are health screenings, an inflatable colon display and new interactive activities hosted by various student clubs.”

In addition to screenings and activities, including a basket raffle, organizations from throughout the community will be onsite to promote well-being and encourage healthy behaviors. Attendees may receive free screenings for blood pressure, hearing and mental health, as well as information on a variety of health-related topics, from diabetes management to substance use disorder education, as well as education on emotional resilience and organ and tissue donation. Geisinger MyCode counselors will also be available for discussions about genetic screenings and the MyCode program. The event will even include a voter registration drive.
