Geisinger becomes the first member of Risant Health

Recognized for changing the status-quo in health care

DANVILLE, Pa. – Modern Healthcare magazine has named Geisinger President and CEO David T. Feinberg, M.D., MBA, one of 12 industry disruptors who share the number 2 spot on the magazine’s annual “Most Influential People in Healthcare” list.

Behind U.S. President Donald J. Trump, in the top position, Dr. Feinberg shares the second spot on the list with 11 others who are identified collectively as “disruptors,” a group of healthcare leaders looking to change the status quo of the health industry. He is joined in the group with, among others, Jeff Bezos, chairman and CEO of Amazon; Tim Cook, CEO of Apple; Dr. Marc Harrison, president and CEO of Intermountain Health; and Bernard Tyson, chairman and CEO of Kaiser Permanente.

Now in its 17th year, Modern Healthcare’s annual “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” list honors and recognizes individuals who have had the most significant impact on the health care industry, as voted on by their peers and the magazine’s senior editors.

Under Dr. Feinberg’s leadership, the Danville-based health system has rolled out programs and services to put the focus on precision medicine and patient care. In May 2018, Dr. Feinberg announced that Geisinger would launch a first-of-its-kind clinical DNA screening program that would make exome sequencing a routine part of patient care. Two months later in July, Dr. Feinberg rolled up his sleeve and became the first patient to participate in the program.

“Understanding our genome’s warning signals will become an essential part of managing our health,” Dr. Feinberg said of the program in July. “Participants can now work with their physicians to deal with what their genome reveals long before they become sick. That might involve making lifestyle changes to reduce their risks or understanding future healthcare needs. This allows us to provide truly anticipatory healthcare, instead of only reacting when it may be too late to change the outcome.”

Along with the clinical DNA program, Geisinger also introduced Fresh Food Farmacy in 2016, which provides free healthy food and education for patients suffering from Type 2 diabetes. The program’s patients have seen success in lowering their hemoglobin A1C and the program is being replicated across the country.

Dr. Feinberg earned his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Berkeley, and graduated with distinction from the University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School. He earned a Master’s of Business Administration from Pepperdine University.

This is the fourth time Dr. Feinberg has made Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Influential list. In addition to this recognition, he recently ranked in the top three of the health care magazine’s “Top 50 Most Influential Physician Executives and Leaders” 2018 list and was named one of the “100 Great leaders in Healthcare” by Becker’s Hospital Review, among other national honors.
