Gastroenterology

This elective introduces the medical student to the field of gastroenterology, hepatology and clinical nutrition in a fashion that is both exciting and educational. We believe students will complete this rotation with an excellent understanding of what gastroenterology encompasses and how our field fits into the matrix of internal medicine, as well as interacting with other services such as general surgery, internal medicine and the intensive care unit.

All staff members have broad training and are board certified in gastroenterology. Several have special interests including nutritional support, evaluation and treatment of malnutrition and evaluation for morbid obesity and bariatric surgery.

Goals & objectives

  • There are numerous weekly academic conferences including radiology conference, GI journal club, research conference, luminal GI histopathology conference, liver histopathology conference and a Friday morning conference which alternates between board review, foregut conference, colorectal surgery conference, M&M and a resident case conference on a rotating basis. The schedule for these conferences is posted within the department and will be included in the student’s packet.
  • Students will be able to shadow staff members on a daily basis both in the outpatient clinic and on the inpatient service. Students will also attend procedures in the endoscopy unit to gain a wide exposure to the clinical spectrum of patients that are seen within the department and the disease entities that are treated, as well as the unique blend of clinical and bedside skills that each staff member brings to the patients bedside.
