General internal medicine/pediatrics

The primary objective of the combined internal medicine - pediatrics elective is to exposes medical students to comprehensive medical care of patients across a spectrum of ages. In addition to providing comprehensive care, students have opportunities to explore the multitude of available career options through interactions with a variety of med-peds trained staff physicians. The rotation elective consists of a combined ambulatory experience in a clinic staffed by med-peds trained physicians as well as experience working with residents and attendings on an inpatient medicine floor.

Goals & objectives

• Medical knowledge: Acquire core medical knowledge and integrate basic pathophysiology with clinical patient management.
  
• Patient care: Students must be active participants in providing patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health, prevention of illness and care at the end of life – at all times acting as the patient’s advocate.
  
• Communication and interpersonal skills: Students should demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that allow them to establish relationships with patients, families, and other members of health care teams.
  
• Professionalism: Students should demonstrate sensitivity to ethical principles and respect for diversity with patients
  
• Practice-based learning: Residents must be able to use scientific methods and evidence to investigate, evaluated and improve their patient care practices.
  
• Systems-based practice: Students demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care and the ability to effectively call on system resources to provide care that is of optimal value.
