Pediatric infectious disease

The goal of the rotation is to provide the medical student with the opportunity to become familiar with common pediatric infectious diseases in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. We expect that the student will gain an understanding of the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and recommended treatments of a variety of infectious diseases seen in pediatrics. The student should become knowledgeable in appropriate antimicrobial choices for various infections including an understanding of antimicrobial resistance. In addition, the student should recognize congenital and acquired immune deficiencies including their presentation, diagnosis and management.

Goals & objectives

The student is expected to function as a member of the pediatric infectious disease team, seeing inpatients on the primary service, completing consults on the inpatient unit and seeing patients in the outpatient clinic. The student is expected to review current literature pertinent to cases seen in the hospital and clinic.

In addition, the student is expected to complete a written scholarly project during their rotation. The scholarly project can take the format of a case report, chart review, journal article review, PowerPoint presentation or other review of current literature. The student should attend regularly scheduled resident conferences including morning report, intake rounds, noon conference and grand gounds.
