Geisinger's Department of Transplantation & Liver Surgery offers a four-week elective rotation in transplantation. Our department provides care for patients between 2 and 90 years old who have end-stage kidney disease, diabetes and complex liver conditions. We provide comprehensive transplantation care that includes kidney transplant, pancreas transplant, liver transplant, AV fistula access and liver resection surgeries.

The rotating medical student will be integrated into our services by becoming active in the daily care of our patients. Medical students will be expected to perform supervised inpatient consults; attend inpatient rounds; assist with clinic and be available for organ procurement, transplant and general surgeries performed by the department surgeons.

Goals & objectives

The overall educational objective for the rotating student is to give the student an overview of transplantation, transplant immunology and organ donation. Specific educational goals will include teaching about:
