Acceptance into the elective is by application only.
All applications must be submitted through the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS).
The rotating medical student will be integrated into our services by becoming active in the daily care of our patients. Medical students will be expected to perform supervised inpatient consults; attend inpatient rounds; assist with clinic and be available for organ procurement, transplant and general surgeries performed by the department surgeons.
Goals & objectives
The overall educational objective for the rotating student is to give the student an overview of transplantation, transplant immunology and organ donation. Specific educational goals will include teaching about:
- Kidney transplantation
- Pancreas transplantation
- Liver transplantation
- General Hepatobiliary surgery
- Dialysis Access/surgery
- Immunosuppression management
- Transplant immunology
- Complications/infections in transplant patients
- Organ procurement
- Ethics of donation
- Distribution of donated organs
