Janet Townsend, MD
Professor of Family Medicine
Biography
Janet Townsend, MD, served as the founding chair of the Department of Family, Community and Rural Health from 2008 – 2015. In this capacity she recruited the founding faculty and established a program of community-based education and research. In her role as senior associate dean, she provided leadership, oversight and coordination of the delivery of all academic activities in Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine’s regional campuses to achieve Geisinger Commonwealth’s education, research and service missions and ultimately, to contribute to improved health in the region. She now serves as GCSOM's senior associate dean for Faculty Affairs. Dr. Townsend was recruited to Geisinger Commonwealth in 2008 after 25 years of medical education leadership at Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, N.Y.
