Biography

William B. Jeffries III, PhD, FAHA, is the vice dean for Medical Education and vice president for Academic Affairs at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. He received his master's and doctoral degrees in pharmacology from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, and he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas in the Department of Pharmacology. In his role at Geisinger he is responsible for oversight of the medical degree program, including curriculum, the Department of Medical Education, student affairs, admissions and other aspects of medical school administration. He has previously served for nearly 10 years as senior associate dean for Medical Education at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. Before that he was a basic scientist and associate dean for Medical Education at Creighton University School of Medicine. Dr. Jeffries’ scholarly efforts in medical education include effective teaching through active learning, curriculum design, strategic institutional planning and technological innovation. He has authored more than 100 original scholarly works. He continues to serve national organizations devoted to medical education and advancement, assuming committee and leadership roles for the Association for American Medical Colleges, the International Society of Medical Science Educators, the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and The American Heart Association. He has presented over 100 faculty development workshops and seminars at national meetings and numerous medical schools. He is co-editor of An Introduction to Medical Teaching, a faculty development manual for health science educators.
