Geisinger's Cytopathology Fellowship is one-year, ACGME-approved program providing in-depth training in diagnostic cytopathology. Geisinger offers a unique multidisciplinary, subspecialty clinic environment that values and strongly supports the practice of cytopathology. The fellow’s training is in a busy cytology laboratory, processing more than 74,000 gynecologic, 6,650 non-gynecologic and 2,215 FNA cases per year. The laboratory is fully automated and utilizes both Sure Path thin-layer technologies with computer-assisted primary screening as well as Thin Prep technologies for the cervical screening specimens.
The technique of fine needle aspiration biopsy is heavily emphasized and the fellow will gain significant experience in performance and on-site interpretation. The fellow will provide on site interpretation for endoscopic ultrasound guided biopsies as well as bronchoscopic ultrasound guided biopsies. Ancillary tests such as immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, and molecular pathology are routinely a part of the evaluation of various cytology specimens and the fellow will be educated in these techniques. The fellow will be responsible for weekly tumor board conferences and will present the pathology materials at these conferences.
Experts from Geisinger's Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine have published a book, "Handbook of Practical Immunohistochemistry: Frequently Asked Questions."
The teaching faculties of the program are the key editors and associate editors of this publication.
To extend the utility of this book, we created a webste, www.IHCFAQ.com provide ongoing updates on immunohistochemistry and thousands of additional stain images of normal and abnormal tissues from our tissue microarray (TMA) collection.
A research project will be designed through staff collaboration with the intention of presentation at a national meeting. Sign-out occurs under direct staff supervision with graduated responsibilities assigned as competence is demonstrated.
Our cytology laboratory is state of the art with automated technology for specimen processing and review. We have wonderful ancillary services such as immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry and molecular pathology to support our diagnostic procedures. These facilities are the basis for an up-to-date training curriculum.
Training, of course, is also heavily dependent on the people. We have an enthusiastic group of experienced personnel and staff in the laboratory and supporting our efforts. We love what we do and are eager to share such a rich learning environment with our fellows.
