The gastroenterology/nutrition fellowship at the Geisinger Health System is one of a few programs nationally that combines training in gastroenterology and nutrition. This three-year fellowship accepts three fellows each year.
The staff of 12 full-time gastroenterologists, 3 GI/hepatologists, and 3 nutrition specialists perform more than 5,000 outpatient consultations and 12,500 endoscopic procedures annually. The fellowship includes outpatient and inpatient clinical training as well as exposure to advanced endoscopic procedures and liver transplantation. Clinical research, supervised by faculty representing gastroenterology or nutrition, is an essential component of the program.
Fellows receive training in all major diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures including exposure to endoscopic ultrasonography, ERCP, endoscopic mucosal resection, and Barrett’s ablation. Specialty services offered by the gastroenterology clinical laboratory include anorectal and esophageal manometry, standard 24-hour and Bravo pH testing, hydrogen breath testing, and capsule endoscopy.
The conference schedule includes standing radiology, GI pathology, liver histopathology, research, board review, and resident case conferences in addition to a journal club and a nutritional seminar. There is also a biweekly core curriculum conference and several other rotating multidisciplinary conferences.
Call is equally shared among the fellows.
