Simulation

General surgery residents participate in simulation activities to enhance their overall training and education during their residency. All PGY levels participate in these activities at different times throughout the year. The simulation curriculum is made up of 10 different areas: intern boot camp, chief boot camp, endoscopy, fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery (FLS), ultrasound, vascular, cadaver lab, Gift of Life, open abdominal simulation, and team-building. For several of the activities, such as endoscopy, FLS, and vascular, the residents are tested on their skills and knowledge and then re-assessed at a later date. Re-assessing the residents is beneficial to our staff as well as our residents.

This lets us know if we need to remediate on a particular skill before moving on. The residents also evaluate each simulation session as we are constantly looking to improve our simulation curriculum for the future. This program wouldn't be possible if it weren't for the many staff members from our department as well as other departments (vascular, thoracic, trauma, and emergency medicine) dedicated to our resident's training. Below is a list of the different sessions each PGY level participates in.
