About us

Geisinger Community Medical Center (GCMC) offers a Podiatric Medicine and Surgical Residency with an additional accreditation in reconstructive rearfoot/ankle surgery that provides residents the opportunity to train in an academic, but collegial atmosphere focused on all facets of reconstructive surgery of the foot, ankle and leg.

The podiatric residency enjoys an excellent working relationship with all departments throughout GCMC, allowing for a multidisciplinary approach to education and medicine. Rotations include emergency medicine, internal medicine, behavioral medicine, pathology, infectious disease, anesthesia and pain management, and radiology. Extensive training in podiatric surgery is complimented by rotations in orthopaedic surgery, vascular surgery, and plastic surgery. An integral part of residency training involves exposure to limb preservation and salvage techniques with special emphasis on the diabetic Charcot foot and ankle, including Ilizarov external fixation application.

GCMC is a Level II Trauma Center, which together with the Podiatric Foot and Ankle Service, provides excellent experience in the medical and surgical treatment of the trauma patient. Complimentary rotations in wound care and hyperbaric medicine are also required.

Geisinger’s podiatric residency program stresses an evidence-based medicine approach to patient care. Weekly journal club, case discussions, resident presentations and ePresent lectures are an integral part of the academic compliment to the program. Residents are also encouraged to engage in original research projects and present this research at national meetings.
