The application process begins with an application to the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). We don’t accept paper applications.
Requirements
You must have graduated from an approved U.S. or Canadian medical school or hold Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification if you graduated from a medical school outside the U.S.
If you graduated from a foreign medical school, be sure your visa status will permit you to complete your training and that you qualify for Pennsylvania state licensure before applying.
Other requirements include:
- Completion of an approved three-year residency in internal medicine at an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited three-year program
- License or eligibility for permanent and unrestricted license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
- Documented visa status if applicable
Expectation
Fellows are expected to become certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine at the earliest opportunity and certainly before completion of their fellowship.
Examination sequence acceptable to the board
All applicants must send a copy of scores from licensure exams from any of the listed sequence to ERAS. Any complete sequence is acceptable to the board. And international graduates applying must possess a valid ECFMG certificate.

- USMLE Steps 1, 2 and 3 or COMLEX 1, 2 and 3

- Dean's letter or medical student performance evaluation
- Three letters of recommendation from your current program
We’d like to see a letter from your program director, one from another faculty member and one from a current colleague.
- ECFMG (international graduates)
- A copy of your scores from licensure exams (FLEX or board scores); See examination sequence acceptable to the board (above)
- Original transcript of grades
After the application is complete, the file will be given to the Nephrology Fellowship program director for review and possible interview. Interviews are scheduled in October.
Program requirements for international medical graduates
- Recent U.S. clinical training in an ACGME-approved program and three letters from program
- Recent graduate of medical school preferred
- Valid ECFMG certificate
- Principal/dean's letter and transcript
- Pass USMLE - USMLE transcript required
