All physicians in the department have regular patient care duties in the dermatology clinic. Residents have scheduled patients four days each week, with one day for independent study. In general, the schedules accommodate times for both new and return patients. Additional patients may be scheduled based on urgency of medical condition, patient convenience or other factors. An attending is assigned to each clinic as the supervising teaching physician. Progressive independence in patient management occurs with advancement in the training program. On most days, morning conference begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 8:45 a.m. Morning clinic begins at 9 a.m. and ends when all patients have been seen. Afternoon clinic begins at 1 p.m. and is usually completed by 5 p.m.
Residents are assigned to the hospital and consult service for one-month intervals in rotation. This resident sees all in-patient consultations requested by other services. A staff physician sees all consultations with the resident.
Pathology conferences are held weekly with core curriculum taught by Tammie Ferringer, MD, and the dermatopathology faculty. Dermatopathology rotation includes slide review and sign out with our staff dermatopathologists.
Clinical image conference
The clinical image unknown conference is conducted by the staff each week, and occasionally by the chief resident. Images are presented to the residents for morphologic description and differential diagnosis. This conference is designed to present both common and unusual cutaneous diseases and formation of a differential diagnosis and decisions regarding therapy.
Assigned journals are discussed each week with all clinical faculty, fellows and residents in attendance. In general, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology is reviewed the first and second weeks of the month, followed by JAMA Dermatology in the third week, and miscellaneous journal articles in the fourth week.
Weekly sessions of assigned sections from various texts are reviewed. Covered disciplines include clinical dermatology, immunology and basic science. Most sessions are moderated by a staff physician, who presents clinical images and directs the discussion.
Other morning conferences
A variety of different conferences is held. Staff members from other departments may lecture on topics of interest in dermatology. Basic science topics are discussed in a monthly conference. Surgery club convenes monthly to review pertinent topics in dermatologic surgery. On most days, morning conference begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 8:45 a.m.
Geisinger Medical Center's Department of Dermatology offers grand rounds approximately once a month during the academic year, September through April. The conferences are attended by dermatologists from the central Pennsylvania area, some of whom invite patients with challenging diagnostic or therapeutic problems.
Grand rounds are held in the dermatology conference room on Woodbine Lane. We have four visiting professors each year. The visiting professors present two lectures at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. (see schedule below for further details). Lunch is held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Patients are available for examination from 12:15 to 1 p.m. in the dermatology clinic, and discussion is held in the conference room from 1 to 3 p.m.
Grand rounds is recognized by the American Academy of Dermatology for up to five hours of AAD Category 1 CME credit and may be used toward the American Academy of Dermatology's Continuing Medical Education Award. All health care providers who care for patients with dermatologic issues are welcome to attend the meetings.
