Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency

Make a lasting impact on families and the healthcare system with our transformative Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency.

About us

Our Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) residency gives you the tools to coordinate and lead a patient-centered and highly effective healthcare team. As a resident in this 24-month program, you’ll work with all facets of Geisinger’s integrated care delivery system with a broad range of opportunities in traditional hospital administration, ambulatory care administration, hematology-oncology programs and health plan pharmacy administration.

Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa., is Geisinger’s flagship hospital and the home base for our HSPAL residency. In the first year of the two-year program, PGY1 residents will follow a similar curriculum and residency structure as the traditional PGY1 residency at Geisinger Medical Center. In your second year, you’ll be integrated as a leader and learner in the different pillars of pharmacy across Enterprise Pharmacy and Geisinger’s service region. Enterprise Pharmacy is a systemwide pharmacy service model made up of more than 400 pharmacists in acute care settings, ambulatory practices, retail and specialty pharmacy, home infusion services, managed care and other administrative areas. Geisinger is host to 11 pharmacy residency programs across the system.

What makes Geisinger’s HSPAL residency program stand out?

At Geisinger, it’s not just about what we do. It’s about how we do it. First, we are an integrated care delivery system with pharmacists and pharmacy services in all aspects of patient care. Geisinger places clinical pharmacists in the care of patients at all touchpoints of care. The diversity of the leadership team and numerous pillars that comprise Enterprise Pharmacy allow the system to be nimble and control the environment where patients receive care. The inclusion of a health plan as part of our pharmacy services is a unique feature of many health systems across the United States. Being a health system pharmacy administration resident will place you in a healthcare model that seeks to provide better care faster and more holistically.

Additionally, the patient and member makeup of our system is special. Geisinger’s service area across Pennsylvania has a base of patients and members who have been part of our system for several generations. We often care for patients — and their family members — throughout their lifespan. The information this privilege provides us as a system allows us to make better decisions to care for each patient’s children, grandchildren and generations to come.

Our purpose

The PGY2 health-system pharmacy administration and leadership residency program builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals and objectives for advanced practice areas. When you successfully complete a PGY2 residency program, you’re prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available. If you complete the PGY1/PGY2 HSPAL at Geisinger, you are prepared for a clinical or operational management or supervisory role in a variety of work settings.

Goals

  • Develop a pharmacy leader with experience and perspective across the continuum of care from direct patient care to executive leadership.
  • Develop a versatile pharmacy leader with experience in all facets of an integrated delivery network.
  • Instill a culture of engagement, innovation and leadership in the future pharmacy leader.
  • Model successful integration of pharmacy into a health system as an institute and health-system pillar.
  • Prepare the pharmacy leader for their role in a diverse, equitable and inclusive healthcare environment.

Build the healthcare delivery system of tomorrow

Message from the program director

Thank you for your interest in Geisinger’s Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency program. The program builds on that experience in PGY2, capitalizing on the unique learning environment offered through the integrated care delivery system at Geisinger. Our team fosters an innovative, supportive learning environment with enriching opportunities for pharmacy residency training in administration and leadership in the practice settings of acute care, ambulatory care and health plan pharmacy. Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared for a clinical or operational management role/supervisory role in a variety of work settings.
