About us

Geisinger's PGY1-PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency is a candidate for accreditation by the American Society of Health System Pharmacy (ASHP). The program welcomed its first PGY1 residents in the 2021-2022 academic year and will recruit for new PGY1 residents for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Our residency and system leadership team is part of all facets of Geisinger’s integrated care delivery system and will provide residents with a broad range of opportunities in traditional hospital administration, ambulatory care administration, hematology-oncology programs and health plan pharmacy administration.

Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa., is Geisinger’s flagship hospital and the home base for our residency program. In the first year of the two-year program, PGY1 residents will follow the same curriculum and residency structure as the traditional PGY1 residency at Geisinger Medical Center. In the second year of the two-year program, residents will be integrated as leaders and learners in the different pillars of pharmacy across Enterprise Pharmacy and Geisinger’s service region. Enterprise Pharmacy is a system-wide pharmacy service model made up of more than 400 pharmacists in acute care settings, ambulatory practices, retail and specialty pharmacy, home infusion services, managed care and other administrative areas. Geisinger is host to nine pharmacy residency programs across the system.

What makes Geisinger’s HSPAL residency program stand out?

Geisinger is unique in the way it is able to provide care to the patients and members it serves. First, Geisinger is an integrated care delivery system, with pharmacists and pharmacy services in all aspects of patient care. Geisinger places clinical pharmacists in the care of patients in hospitals, outpatient clinics, retail pharmacies, specialty pharmacies, home infusion programs, outcomes research and a health plan. The diversity of the leadership team and the numerous pillars that make up Enterprise Pharmacy allow for the system to be nimble and completely control the environment in which patients receive care. The inclusion of a health plan as part of our pharmacy services is a unique feature to many health systems across the United States.

Additionally, the patient and member makeup of our system is special. Geisinger’s service area across Pennsylvania creates a patient and member base who have been part of our system for several generations. We have the privilege to care for the same patient from their birth to their physical departure and the family who surrounds them. The information this privilege provides for us as a system allow us to make better decisions to care for that patient’s children, grandchildren and generations to come.
