About us

Welcome to Geisinger's Psychiatry Residency. Residents will achieve competence in providing care across the patient's lifespan utilizing state-of-the-art clinical and technical venues in which we treat patients. The spectrum of medical and surgical specialties gathered within the system supplies a breadth of complex patient pathologies and presentations that will prepare residents for any future practice, as they provide the chance to learn skills, collaborate with colleagues, and develop as professional leaders in the field.

We strive to innovatively deliver treatment and support at the point of care; residents will not only practice in our various inpatient psychiatric units, but also throughout a continuum of health care settings, from our eICU and Level I Trauma service featuring a six-helicopter LifeFlight fleet, to our Hospital for Advanced Medicine, to community mental health clinics, to primary and specialty care offices, to our Janet Weis Children's Hospital replete with pediatric subspecialty care, to support groups led by patients themselves. The service orientation of our not-for-profit health system endows graduating residents with a focus on patient dignity, autonomy, and wellbeing across our region's varied socioeconomic strata. Our clinical excellence is recognized through Magnet designations, presidential commendations, and participation as a Schwartz Center health system. We are a major teaching center for medical students from Temple University and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine; students relocate to Danville to matriculate at GHS for their full final two years of medical school involving a broad range of core and elective clinical rotations.

We are committed to training psychiatrists with strong clinical acumen, dedication to service, evidence-based knowledge and reasoning, and leadership skills encompassing inter-professional practice.

Our residency is dedicated to individually developing the clinical interests of each of our residents, centered on the variety and complexity of our patients. Our health system utilizes the latest in learning innovations. We emphasize situating the practice of psychiatry within the broader context of modern medicine and healthcare delivery.
