Paige Carrigan, DO

Areas of interest: Anxiety, panic disorder and OCD
Why I chose Geisinger for my residency training: I chose Geisinger because having a positive learning/work environment is important to me. I really enjoyed meeting and talking with everyone during my interview, and was excited when I matched here.

Timothy Newell, DO
Medical school: University of New England, College of Osteopathic Medicine
Areas of interest: Neuropsychiatry, neurocognitive disorders
Why I chose Geisinger for my residency training: I like that Geisinger is an immense Hospital System located  in a rural area. You get to see a lot of disorders that  you would not necessarily see  in a smaller hospital, but still get the feel of a rural environment. The area around Geisinger is beautiful, and being from Maine, it was an easy transition. Since this is a newer program, residents have more opportunity to influence how the program is structured, and help meet their own needs. This was a program that I knew would encourage and help me pursue my interest in the field neuropsychiatry.

Krista Ulisse, DO
Medical school: Campbell University Jerry Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine
Areas of interest: Forensic and addiction psychiatry
Why I chose Geisinger for my residency training: On my pre-interview dinner, I was impressed by the friendliness and support of the residents. The program provides diverse learning opportunities like state hospital, forensic, and VA experiences while respecting the importance of work-life balance. On my interview day, the program director spoke with me about my interest in forensic psychiatry and shared his own stories about working with this population. As forensics is an interest of mine, I was assured by this conversation that the program would provide me with the mentorship necessary to learn about forensic practice. The small town of Danville was also ideal for me, as I was looking to stay away from larger cities and train in a place where I could experience nature. Ultimately, I chose Geisinger because I found myself thinking, "Geisinger was better" at every other interview. I'm very happy I chose this program and have been impressed by the willingness of my attendings and senior residents to ensure I make the transition from medical student to resident as seamlessly as possible.

Jennifer Uspal, DO

Why I chose Geisinger for my residency training: There were many reasons why Geisinger stood out to me as the ideal place to do residency training. Geisinger is a well-known and respected name throughout the medical field and is known to be at the forefront of medical advancement and patient care. Geisinger’s psychiatry program offers a perfect balance of learning and service in a collegial and supportive environment. On a personal level, it is not far from home for me and I enjoy living and practicing in the rural setting.

Why I chose Geisinger for my residency training: I grew up in a small town, and Danville felt like my "home away from home." In addition, Geisinger is a nationally recognized integrated healthcare system complete with state-of-the-art resources and technology, but without the big-city stress.

Ashley Dotson, DO

Medical school: West Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine
Area of interest: Addiction - I love the challenge that comes with battling a disease with such a strong hold on the patients. Though the numbers for "success" are not that promising, when you're able to guide a patient to the light at the end of that long, dark tunnel, it is extremely rewarding.
Why I chose Geisinger for my residency training: Geisinger was an instinctive choice for me. Family members of mine have been coming to Geisinger for years and have always been impressed with the quality of care and attention to patient satisfaction. I trust Geisinger; I knew when I was looking into training programs that I would receive one of the best, if not THE best, education available here. I have not been disappointed. Furthermore, I love the region. I completed my undergraduate degree about 45 minutes from Danville at Lycoming College, so it was exciting to return to an area I was already fairly familiar with. Though the town of Danville is quaint and small in size, there is so much to do and see in the surrounding cities and mountains.

Sarah Wagner, DO

Why I chose Geisinger for my residency training: I chose Geisinger for residency after participating in Geisinger's clinical campus as a medical student. I was able to do most of my rotations here, and enjoyed my time in each department. I found the psychiatry department to be very welcoming and organized. The electronic health record is easy to use, and it maximizes our ability to care for our patients. Also, I thoroughly enjoy the community in Danville. It is an ideal place to raise my two children. I love the small town feel, with the benefits of a large health system.

Why I chose Geisinger for my residency training:
The residents and attendings at Geisinger are very personable, encouraging and understanding. Teaching is a large emphasis here, and it's usually done in a very relaxed atmosphere, which is always conducive to learning. I was looking to work at a large hospital with abundant resources and opportunities, but I also wanted to find a residency that would allow me to live in a serene environment with very little traffic. By working for Geisinger Medical Center and living in central PA, I get the best of both worlds!

Caleb Washabaugh, DO
Medical school:

Areas of interest: Addiction, forensics, general inpatient psychiatry
Why I chose Geisinger for my residency training: I chose Geisinger because I think the culture of patient-centered medicine is something they really emphasize and I am glad to be a part of a health system that holds that dear. Also, being from a small Pennsylvania town I can relate to the area and I believe central Pennsylvania is a unique and beautiful place. I enjoy the close proximity to nature and outdoor activities, as well as the interesting things to do in the surrounding areas. During rotations here I really enjoyed the staff and residents and thought it would be a great atmosphere to learn and grow into a psychiatrist.
