Assistant Professor – Part-time (.60 FTE)

This part-time (.60 FTE) position is responsible providing direct teaching, instruction and facilitation for student development of clinical skills to include communication and/or physical exam skills for general clinical education teaching, instruction, facilitation and curriculum development for MD1, MD2, MD3 and MD4 students.

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine is a fully-accredited allopathic medical school located in northeastern Pennsylvania. It offers a community-oriented, patient-centered and evidence-based education curriculum. The educational program is distributed across a multi-county region of northeastern and central Pennsylvania. The basic sciences curriculum is delivered primarily at the main campus in Scranton, Pa. The medical school enjoys considerable regional support for its educational mission, research and service. DUTIES: The successful candidate will be available to facilitate clinical skills and communication sessions for MD1 and MD2 students in the Art and Practice of Medicine (APM) and Patient-centered Medicine (PCM) courses; serve as collaborating faculty member and facilitator for small group sessions for Case-based Learning (CBL) 1 and 2 for MD1 and MD2; serve as collaborating faculty member and facilator for Observed Structured Clincial Examinations (OSCE) and Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) sessions for MD1 through MD4; serve as collaborating faculty member for Human Structure and Function (HSF), Anatomy and Neuroscience sessions regarding radiology and imaging; maintain professional growth and development through seminars, trainings, workshops, current literature and professional affiliations regarding trends and practices in teaching clinical skills and communication; perform other duties as assigned by the chair of Department of Medical Education (DME) and/or the vice chair of DME.

QUALIFICATIONS: A clinical terminal degree (i.e. MD, DO, PA, NP) with clinical experience or equivalent is required; educational experience preferred. The successful candidate should be an engaged and respected clinician and possess excellent interprofessional skills; attention to detail; time and ability to monitor GCSOM email communications in a timely fashion; ability to execute responsibilities of the job; and ability to demonstrate commitment to facilitating learning in the MD program.

Clinician Educator – Psychiatry

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth) is seeking two full-time academic faculty members in psychiatry. These positions are responsible for providing patient care, resident supervision, teaching and curriculum development in the area of specialty. Appointments will be at academic ranks appropriate to the credentials.

Geisinger Commonwealth is a fully-accredited, allopathic medical school located in northeast and central Pennsylvania. It offers a community-oriented, patient-centered and evidence-based medical education curriculum, as well as a masters of biomedical sciences degree (MBS), with addition graduate programs under development. The educational program is distributed across a multi-county region of northeast and central Pennsylvania with regional campus sites in Scranton (North Campus), Wilkes-Barre (South Campus), Williamsport (West Campus), and Sayre (Guthrie Campus). The college enjoys considerable regional support for its educational mission, research and service. These faculty members will be responsible for patient care, supervision of residents and educational leadership. Responsibilities also include assisting in planning and participating in core and ancillary clinical education activities and serving as an advisor to residents and medical students. Approval for all assigned activities will be through the chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences at Geisinger Commonwealth.

Specific responsibilities for both positions include:

  • Teaching responsibilities (50 percent effort) in the MD curriculum, the certificate program in behavioral health for primary care physicians, and potentially other programs to be developed;
    • Administrative responsibilities as the assistant chair for psychiatry education or director for the mind block in the MD2 year curriculum and curriculum development for the certificate program in behavioral health.
    • Service as a third-year psychiatry clerkship preceptor as needed
  • Psychiatry residency and patient care responsibilities (40 percent effort), providing patient care at a clinical site of residency training, supervising residents in that clinical setting, and providing administrative support as appropriate.
  • Community service (10 percent) includes participating in Geisinger Commonwealth’s Behavioral Health Initiative (BHI) and engaging with community partners in the BHI (or other strategic initiative) as deemed appropriate by the vice dean and academic department chair in coordination with the BHI executive director and related workgroups or task force.

A clinical terminal degree, such as MD, DO or MBBS, is required, along with board certification in psychiatry.

Clinical Skills Facilitator

This position is responsible for providing direct teaching, instruction and facilitation for student development of clinical skills to include communication and/or physical exam skills for general clinical education.

This position is a temporary, part-time, per session (sessional) position. Pay is per session with encouragement to complete the cycle within an academic year.

The person in this position is required to conduct business in a professional and cordial manner that will uphold the integrity and reputation of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth). The person in this position must maintain a thorough working knowledge of and adhere to the policies, regulations and procedures of Geisinger Commonwealth.

The Clinical Skills Facilitator is responsible for the following essential functions/responsibilities:

  1. Serve as clinical faculty member for set clinical skills sessions
  2. Serve as small group facilitator and clinical skills teacher in pre-clinical skills development courses
  3. Prepare to assist students with their acquisition of clinical skills using online educational and curriculum resources
  4. Attend required faculty development sessions and trainings related to clinical skills session

Qualifications:

  • An engaged and respected clinician
  • Excellent interprofessional skills; attention to detail; ability to monitor Geisinger Commonwealth email communications in a timely fashion; ability to execute responsibilities of the job; demonstrate commitment to teaching Geisinger Commonwealth M1 and/or M2 students
  • Commitment to attending all sessions in training period (either communication or physical exam sessions)

Education/experience and/or training:

  • Clinical degree (e.g., MD, DO, MBBS, DNP, NP, PA) with clinical experience (or equivalent)

Licenses or certifications:

  • A valid Pennsylvania driver’s license is required
  • Clinical license in field; if retired, evidence of past license without past suspensions
