A comprehensive 8-week summer program for accepted under-represented in medicine (URiM) students to help them transition smoothly into the rigorous demands of medical school.
Program overview
- Virtual and hybrid options
- A broad range of academic, professional, and personal development opportunities prepare students for success in medical education including participation in research projects, poster presentations and writing for publication
- Mentoring from medical students
- Physician shadowing
- Medical school learning strategies and curriculum introduction
- Workshops on medical ethics, cultural competency, wellness and important issues in medicine
- Networking events
Application requirements and dates
Students must be committed to Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and identify as URiM and/or another underserved category.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis from March thru May each year.

Inspiring and supporting medical student research in medicine.
Program overview
- Students apply for research opportunities and participate in an 8-week project that culminates in a poster presentation and writing for publication.
- Additional opportunities include networking with physicians, clinicians and researchers.
- Workshops are provided on interesting topics in medicine and research.
Application requirements and dates
MD1 students who identify as URiM and are in good academic standing can apply.
Applications are accepted Jan. 1 through April 1 and include an interview.

Supporting the academic and professional growth of underserved medical students.
Program overview
- Students can receive small stipends toward test preparation, study materials and attendance at conferences with available funding.
- Continued advisement is provided by staff, outreach opportunities with underserved local K–12 students and leadership positions within the Office of Pathway Programs are available.
- Networking and mentoring by physicians is coordinated.
Application requirements and dates
URiM Geisinger Commonwealth students are made aware of programs throughout the year by Pathway Programs staff.
Applications are accepted Jan. 1 through April 1 each year.
