Informatics Team

Over the years, Geisinger has become well known for its innovative work in informatics. In fact, having used the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system since 1996, we’ve developed a deep partnership with Cerner Corporation for population health analytics, and we have an extensive data warehouse with clinical and claims data, social determinants of health, patient-reported outcomes and more.

Our work in informatics is focused on:

  • Improving quality of care
  • Enhancing operational effectiveness
  • Promoting population health management
  • Supporting innovative research
  • Educating the next generation of informatics professionals

Data management and governance

Geisinger’s programs in data management and governance provide a comprehensive understanding of patient care and how to improve the health of the populations that we serve.

We maximize the value of data by resolving process, procedure and policy challenges related to data content, access and quality. Key capabilities include ingestion and modeling of high volume, high velocity data, master data management (MDM), data cataloging and data classification.

Business intelligence and advanced analytics

Across the Geisinger enterprise, we transform data to insights using business intelligence capabilities and advanced analytics techniques.

Our interoperability team works with enterprise business leaders to provide deep workflow integration using application programming interfaces (API) and standards such as HL7 FHIR. Our analytics solution team supports knowledge delivery across our clinical and health plan operations, population health, innovative care delivery initiatives, and our clinical and health plan quality programs.

Our analysts, data scientists and engineers implement solutions to promote data-driven decision-making, to improve operational efficiency and enhance our patient and members’ experience.

Physician and pharmacy informatics

Our physician and pharmacy informaticians’ goal is to optimize health, healthcare and the experiences of our patients and staff through thoughtful application and configuration of health information technology with a relentless focus on usability. Understanding the needs of our patients, staff and organization drives prioritization, development and delivery of solutions that help to solve meaningful problems.

Our two-year ACGME-accredited Clinical Informatics (CI) Fellowship provides a unique experience for physicians who have successfully completed an accredited residency program in any medical specialty. Clinical informatics fellows learn informatics principles in a hands-on setting and have the opportunity to lead meaningful projects in healthcare transformation.
