Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency

Help patients feel healthier and live more comfortably. A Geisinger Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency will show you how.

About us

The Geisinger Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Residency is a four-year categorical program that includes a built-in internship. Your clinical training will take place across Geisinger’s multiple inpatient/outpatient sites, including Geisinger Medical Center, Geisinger Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital and Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital. As part of the only tertiary care center for physical medicine and rehabilitation within a 70 mile radius, the Department of PM&R will expose you to diverse and complementary patient populations and experiences.

Geisinger is a fully integrated, nonprofit health service organization, providing services to 1 million residents in 45 counties in central and northeastern Pennsylvania. We’re a fully integrated not-for-profit health service organization dedicated to excellence in care, education and research. Our multidisciplinary physician-led system includes successful clinical programs, sophisticated information technology platforms, robust research programs and an insurance provider, Geisinger Health Plan.

Ryan Roza, MD, program director

Dear colleague,

Thank you for your interest in the Geisinger Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency program. Geisinger has a long tradition of excellence in residency training and remains committed to education as an integral part of our overall mission. The diverse patient population served by our health system represents an exceptional educational opportunity for residents like you.

The breadth of conditions you will manage as a resident, in both inpatient and outpatient settings, will prepare you to excel at providing optimal care for your patients following completion of your training. We seek to challenge our residents to pursue excellence in academics and achieve the essential skills to provide superior care.

The mission of Geisinger’s PM&R department, a part of Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute, is to provide the highest-quality patient care and enhance the quality of life for all patients. Geisinger has been nationally recognized as a leader in innovation, quality and the use of technology in enhancing care. The electronic health record system has been implemented at all outpatient and inpatient sites throughout the system. Information on each patient is readily available for every patient encounter, no matter where the patient was seen in the system, and patients communicate with their physicians in a secure mode. The data contained within the electronic health record contains a wealth of information that can be used for the purpose of quality improvement and clinical investigation. The appropriate use of technology in the Geisinger system provides an ideal platform on which to train physicians for the future. Geisinger’s training programs are supported by modern facilities and state-of-the-art equipment.

The PM&R residency curriculum provides objectives for each clinical rotation, and focuses on developing specific clinical competencies and professionalism. We are committed to excellence in our patient care and teaching.

Our staff is also committed to teaching and helping you reach your potential. We strive to nurture a collegial atmosphere of teamwork, compassionate patient care and academic excellence. Daily personal interaction between the resident and the attending physician sets this program apart from many others.

Our residency program strives to achieve didactic and clinical excellence through a categorical model that offers one-on-one mentorship from our faculty. To further enhance your educational experience, support is provided for residents who are willing to actively engage in clinical research. Each department in the Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute has ongoing clinical projects, so be sure to propose research topics you’re passionate about that support our mission of excellence and growth. You’re encouraged to present your research in national and international meetings, as well as during Geisinger’s research week.

Thanks for visiting our website. I invite you to continue exploring what sets us apart.
