Resident/fellow life

A strong community that supports you every step of the way.

As a Geisinger resident or fellow, you’ll have the support of an entire community to help you grow. We’re here to help with everything from the relocation process to connecting you with local activities so you can build your village.

House Staff Association

Our house staff association holds social events for residents throughout the year. A Night on the Red Carpet Gala gives residents and fellows a chance to dress up, let loose and dance the night away.

Life in our local communities

Northeastern and central Pennsylvania offer the benefits of rural living with convenient access to major urban centers, including New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. As a busy resident, however, you may just want to stay put. Fortunately, with breathtaking natural beauty, rich history and charming towns, you won’t have to go far for relaxation and fun.

Check out local happenings and attractions here:

Central region

Home of Geisinger Medical Center, our central region is located on the Susquehanna River and includes the towns of Danville and Bloomsburg.

Danville

Situated along the North Branch of the Susquehanna River, Danville has a history forged in iron and in innovative healthcare. More than 80,000 people call this area home. You’ll have endless opportunities for outdoor recreation, like biking, camping and skiing. PPL’s Montour Preserve features over 14 miles of hiking and walking trails, picnicking, fishing and boating on Lake Chillisquaque.

For the thrill seekers, Knoebels Amusement Resort, America’s largest free admission amusement park, is only 20 minutes away and is open from spring through early fall.

Bloomsburg

Bloomsburg is a small, historic town that features a university and recreation hub called Town Park, offering baseball and soccer fields, bocce ball courts, tennis courts, basketball courts, a fitness trail, bandshell, community pool and a skate park. A pond in Town Park is stocked with fish for an annual fishing derby.

Beyond Town Park, you’ll find plenty to do here. Explore the vibrant downtown or visit the Bloomsburg Fair (one of the oldest and longest running fairs in the country). Bloomsburg has something for everyone.

Residents Auxiliary

The Residents Auxiliary supports residents, fellows and their families throughout residency. Through this group, learners get:

  • Socialization opportunities for resident spouses and families
  • Assistance with the relocation process
  • Real estate listings and other housing resources

And with groups ranging from food and wine to book clubs, finding “fellowship” is easy.

Northeast region

Birthplace of the Labor movement and Geisinger’s urban hub, the northeast region is home to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre metro area.

Wilkes-Barre

Located along the Susquehanna River, the City of Wilkes-Barre has many venues for residents and visitors to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the Wyoming Valley. Kirby Park and Coal Street Park provide outdoor recreational amenities such as playgrounds, pavilions, picnic tables, basketball courts and multi-purpose fields. The renovated River Common area, located along the Susquehanna River, features two portals, which bring views of the river to the street level, an amphitheater for outdoor performances, walking corridors, a boat launch and other infrastructure improvements to accommodate concerts and festivals.

Scranton

Scranton wasn’t always known as home of “The Office.” Incorporated in 1866, the city has a population of about 75,000, a growing downtown business district and several institutions of higher education. The community also offers plenty of outdoor activities, a vibrant arts community and a diverse population.

West region

Geisinger’s west region is home to the Nittany Mountains, covered bridges and quiet charm.

Lewistown

In Lewistown, you'll find covered bridges and little Victorian towns. Located along the Juniata River, Lewistown is home to many historic structures including its courthouse, Embassy Theatre, McCoy House and the Stone Arch Bridge. It is home to both Amish and Mennonite populations. Its natural setting is great for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hunting, hiking, biking and walking. Located just of Route 322, Lewistown is situated a short distance from Penn State.

State College

State College – also known as Happy Valley – is the home of the Pennsylvania State University, which means its downtown is always vibrant and busy. During football season, of course, the town’s population of about 40,000 people skyrockets up to 230,000, making it temporarily the third largest city in the state. You may never run out of things to do on such a large university campus, but other amenities await. Hike and mountain biking on Harvest Fields Community Trails or observe more than 140 species of resident and migratory birds at the Galen and Nancy Dreibelbis Viewing Area, featuring a linear trail surrounding the wetland. And, like most communities in the Geisinger footprint, there are plenty of festivals. You can check the calendar at HappyValley.com/events.
