Centered in an integrated, world-class health system and led by faculty with diverse interests, the Geisinger Medical Center Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship can prepare you to achieve whatever professional goals you have in the field of sports medicine.
Our one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship is based in a region with an abundance of high schools, universities and opportunities to work at large athletic events, too.
As our sports medicine fellow, you’ll be guided by faculty dedicated to your success, whether your interest lies in sports cardiology, women’s health, endurance medicine or another area of specialization. We’re here to work with you, one on one.
Because our program is uniquely placed in the orthopaedic and sports medicine departments at Geisinger Medical Center, a large teaching and research institution, you’ll gain direct training from our orthopaedic sports surgeons and musculoskeletal trained radiologists.
You’ll also have access to the resources of our top-tier orthopaedic residency training program. That means you’ll follow surgical cases through to the operating room, participate in cadaver dissections and use our skills lab to practice ultrasound-guided injections on cadaver specimens.
You’ll join a team with broad interests and experience. Our faculty includes 4 primary care sports-medicine–trained physicians with residency training in pediatrics, emergency medicine, PMR and family practice. Our surgical faculty includes 3 pediatric orthopaedists, 3 sports medicine surgeons, 3 hand surgeons and a foot and ankle surgeon.
Musculoskeletal ultrasound training is a critical part of the curriculum. You’ll take part in monthly didactics with case discussions, lectures and hands-on training on live and cadaver models. Our faculty has four RMSK-trained members with over 25 years of combine musculoskeletal ultrasound experience. You’ll also become versed in diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasound-guided injections for all MSK body regions. Over the course of your year with us, you can expect to complete more than 200 diagnostic and ultrasound-guided procedures, 150 diagnostic parentheses making you eligible for RMS keyboard and 500 ultrasounds guided procedures.
Our curriculum also includes board review sessions, monthly journal clubs, MRI and fracture conferences, and quarterly sports medicine morbidity and mortality conferences attended by our orthopaedic, athletic training and physical therapy colleagues.
Our sports medicine coverage includes Bucknell University (Division I), Bloomsburg University (Division II) and Susquehanna University (Division III). You’ll also cover mass community events including but not limited to mountain bike races, wrestling tournaments and trail runs.
Finally, you’ll train in our newly remodeled, state-of-the-art sports medicine clinic, which is equipped with modern, efficient exam rooms and digital MRI, CT and X-ray equipment. The clinic also has a dedicated procedure room for ultrasound-guided regenerative injections and microtenotomy procedures.

Assigned rotations include ortho sports medicine, radiology, MSK ultrasound, podiatry, cardiac rehabilitation, physical therapy and elective. Blocks of time are set aside for anatomy dissection and review, exercise physiology, nutrition and Pennsylvania Special Olympics coverage.
