Hand & Upper-Extremity Research Fellowship

About us 

Established in 2018, the Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute (MSKI) Hand & Upper-Extremity Research Fellowship offers a funded, 1-year research opportunity for U.S. and international postgraduate trainees, U.S. medical students, and dedicated positions for medical students from Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. Three 1-year fellowships are available.

The fellowship is built on a robust mentorship model, equipping you with essential skills in statistics, research methodology, scientific writing and grant writing. The program also incorporates clinical shadowing opportunities, immersing you in a comprehensive didactic curriculum alongside the Geisinger Orthopaedic Surgery Residency. You’ll also participate in anatomic dissection labs and departmental/division journal clubs.

This fellowship is designed to give you a well-rounded and enriching experience, combining research with hands-on clinical exposure and educational activities.

Areas of research focus

The Hand & Upper-Extremity Research Fellowship encompasses a range of clinical and basic science topics related to the shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist. As a fellow, you’ll have the unique opportunity to collaborate with various subspecialties, including orthopaedic trauma, pediatric orthopaedics, sports medicine and adult reconstruction. The key areas of focus for clinical and basic science research include:
  • Upper-extremity trauma
  • Prosthetic reconstruction and arthroplasty of the upper limb
  • Peripheral compressive neuropathy
  • Resident and fellow education
  • Technology in healthcare
  • Genetics

Application process & timeline 

We are offering 3 fellowship positions:

For Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine students:

  • Number of positions: 2
  • You must have completed your third year of medical school before starting. Fellowship year occurs between MS3 and MS4. 
  • Submit applications/inquiries to Mskiresearch@geisinger.edu on a rolling basis.   
  • Interviews are typically conducted during the fall of the MS3 year, with final decisions made during January of MS3.  

For international/U.S. postgraduate trainees or current U.S. medical students:

  • Number of positions: 1
  • International graduates must have successfully completed medical school.
  • Potential international applicants who have started or completed an orthopaedic surgery residency are encouraged to apply.
