Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship – Northeast

Become a well-rounded practitioner equipped to handle a diverse range of patients.

About us

Pulmonary and critical care medicine is an exciting specialty, allowing you to work with a diverse population of patients. This three-year fellowship will prepare you by providing exposure to a wide range of lung diseases, as well as readying you to manage patients with life-threatening illnesses.

As a fellow, you’ll work with faculty members at both Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, Pa. We focus on building the foundations of a solid clinical understanding of physiological concepts, on which you will build your medical knowledge. Along with guiding your clinical experience, our faculty help you build your communication skills, develop research acumen and cultivate leadership abilities.

The population of northeast Pennsylvania spans rural and urban settings. Many patients travel great distances to be seen, expanding our program’s reach. You’ll have the opportunity to care for patients from a variety of backgrounds in the pulmonary clinic.

Geisinger was one of the first health systems in the nation to adopt Epic electronic medical records (EMR) more than 25 years ago. Epic captures most of the care for people living in our geographic region, giving you unique opportunities for the research we’ll encourage you to undertake and publish.

Our vision and mission

Vision

Our goal is to educate, encourage and shape you into a confident, compassionate physician. You’ll leave the program with a dedication to building programs to support your patients and communities, helping them breathe better and live healthier.

Mission

Our mission is developed with Geisinger’s core values: kindness, excellence, safety, learning and innovation.

Knowledge and skills

Our goal is to deliver the best learning experience for our fellows, with an integrated program that provides high quality education. We care for our patients using the foundational tenets of the ICU — excellence in communication, evidence-based knowledge, procedural skill and empathy.

Education

The word doctor derives from the Latin docēre, to teach. Education is a lifelong process in medicine. That’s why we involve our fellows from day one. We use multiple modalities to engage our learners, from didactics to practical instruction. Along with this, we’ll ask you to become a teacher, yourself. Teaching is both an art and a skill, as well as an obligation to help the next generation of physicians fulfil the oath they took to help others.

Leadership

Our program helps build a mindset of growth, change and adaptation. We want our graduates to go on to be the leaders of the future — to develop programs that will help patients and families. To discover new ways to promote healthy living and prevent harm. To build connections to others and foster cooperation within healthcare.

Message from the program director

We’re very excited to launch our new fellowship program, centered in northeast Pennsylvania. Our goal is to shape future leaders like you through innovative learning and collaborative education. We hope to inspire you with the core values that make our faculty tick — dedication, compassion, resilience, perseverance and empathy.

- Paul Arkless, MD
