The Kistler Family Medicine Residency in Wilkes-Barre exemplifies Geisinger’s academic mission to train the best future physicians. Named in honor of highly-regarded family physician and community leader, David Kistler, MD, the program seeks to train community-based family physicians capable of taking care of both our local area, the state of Pennsylvania and the rest of the country.
The program launched in 2007, and attracts top-notch medical students from all across the country. Our residents practice in a dedicated family medicine residency clinic attached to the hospital in which they admit and run their own adult inpatient service unopposed. During the course of their residency, they establish their own panel of patients whom they follow into the hospital, nursing home and across the continuum of their care.
- We will train our residents to provide high-quality, patient-centered care. We expect our residents to become caring and conscientious community family medicine physicians, doctors we would want as our own personal physician.
- At the completion of our program, we hope that each resident will become our colleague within Geisinger. A resident trained here, can stay here if they so choose.
- Should our residents go elsewhere, we expect them to use what has been learned here to improve care elsewhere and to act as ambassadors for our program and Geisinger.
